Library Science Honor Society Beta Phi Mu Names Kelvin Watson 2026 Distinguished Member

LAS VEGAS (June 29, 2026) - Beta Phi Mu has honored Las Vegas-Clark County Library District Executive Director Kelvin Watson with its 2026 Distinguished Member Award.

This award acknowledges outstanding contributions to Library and Information Science by members who have rendered exceptional service to the profession. The announcement was made at Beta Phi Mu’s Annual Meeting on June 25, 2026, during the American Library Association Annual Conference & Exhibition in Chicago.

“Kelvin Watson continues to redefine the role of libraries by positioning them as holistic community organizations that not only provide access to books and information, but also serve as hubs for support, opportunity, and community care. His vision centers on changing the trajectory of libraries so they can better meet the evolving needs of the communities they serve,” said Dr. Zachary Stier, past president of the Beta Phi Mu Executive Board, in a statement.

“A key example of that vision is a new partnership with a dental school that will bring dental services directly into the library setting,” Dr. Zach continued. “The initiative is about ‘meeting people where they are’ and removing barriers to care by offering services in a trusted and accessible community space. The partnership reflects a broader commitment to improving quality of life and creating meaningful community impact.”

The Beta Phi Mu Executive Committee noted that at the heart of Watson’s leadership philosophy is a belief that libraries should help lift lives by connecting people not only to knowledge, but also to resources, opportunity, and support. Watson underscores the importance of storytelling, noting that sharing stories is essential to building understanding, highlighting impact, and strengthening community connections. Through innovative partnerships and a people centered approach, Watson continues to advocate for libraries as transformative institutions that can serve as catalysts for empowerment and community wellbeing.

Watson, reflecting on being named the 2026 Beta Phi Mu Distinguished Member Award winner, praised his team for helping drive the library’s mission and community impact.

“I’m honored to be recognized by Beta Phi Mu, and I share this award with the extraordinary team I’m privileged to work alongside,” Watson said. “Their creativity, commitment, and belief in our mission make this kind of recognition possible. Together, we are working to reimagine what a library can be for the community, not only as a place of discovery, but also as a place of belonging, support, and opportunity. This award allows us to further spotlight the evolving impact libraries can have in people’s lives as centers for connection, support, and empowerment.”
