Free To Be

Welcome to the Las Vegas-Clark County Library District’s new public education campaign! The theme of our campaign is Free To Be – with seven specific words that illustrate the fun, educational, fascinating, and community-building experiences that you, your friends, and family can enjoy in our 25 branches.

These words represent the concept of freedom that the Library District provides to our customers every day ... freedom to learn, to grow, to change, and to explore.

CAMPAIGN BACKGROUND

The Inspiration

The theme of freedom was inspired by feedback from Library District staff, and by this New York Times interview with Librarian of Congress Carla Hayden, who believes that libraries are the key to a free society. In the interview, Ms. Hayden emphasized that librarians are purveyors of free speech and quoted Frederick Douglass, who said, “Once you learn to read, you will be forever free.”

Evolution / Revolution

This is an exciting time of transformation and change for libraries and the Las Vegas-Clark County Library District is leading the way. As the back-to-back recipient of the ALA Library of the Future Award in 2022 & 2023 (the first library system to ever accomplish this), we are rethinking the use of our buildings, forging innovative community partnerships, and educating the public about the wonderful world of discovery that they will find every day within our buildings and on our website.

Consider this: For children and young people who currently use our ever-evolving spaces and digital services, the word “library” already means something fundamentally different than it did just a generation ago.

We continue to be fierce advocates for literacy and free access to information, but the digital revolution has allowed us to reimagine how we deliver these services. Beyond just books, our libraries have become centers for technology and hands-on learning; arts, culture, and live performances; job training and economic empowerment; as well as community gathering spaces for people of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities.

What We Do & Why We Do It

People are important to us.

We recognize the complete person, not just one aspect of an individual or one particular need someone might have. Everyone’s life experience is different. This is something that we recognize, value, and strive to build community and connections around.

We are partners in education.

We are part of a larger group of educators, including public schools, charter schools, vocational programs, colleges, and universities that improve the quality of life in our community. We offer everyone — regardless of age, background, or means — opportunities to keep learning and to discover something new.

We are building a community of readers.

Reading is the foundation of education. We are helping to create a strong community by teaching reading skills, sharing stories, and providing books in a wide variety of formats. We help prepare young children to start school and help people of any age become better readers.

We will meet you where you are, and help you get what you need.

We enjoy helping our customers meet their needs today and their aspirations for tomorrow. They will find books, movies, music, access to computers and cutting-edge technology, homework help, tutoring, trustworthy information, and a place to make new friends.

It's your future. We help you to pursue it.

The Library District is dedicated to helping our customers achieve their hopes and dreams, bringing possibilities to life, and supporting people to change their lives for the better.

We encourage you to dream BIG. Anything is possible.

Our Logo

Our new logo is a departure from Library District logos of the past, which were more governmental in nature. The new design suggests a joyful person and a feeling of welcome and human interaction.

The Free To Be theme is the essence of our brand, and it will often be included as part of our logo. Free To Be serves as a call to action, to reach beyond the familiar and embrace the unexpected ... to be free to reinvent oneself and pursue a dream.
