Jeff Fulmer: Hayikwiir Mat’aar

Hayikwiir Mat’aar is the traditional name of the Mojave Desert in the native language of the Mohave people. With these works, I look at and interpret plant life, landscape, and time of day in the Mojave Desert and the Desert Southwest. These works are comprised of acrylic paint on canvas and wooden panels and acrylic paint on wooden forms. The Mojave Desert and Desert Southwest forms become the vehicle I use to investigate texture, pattern, repetition, and variety within artwork and within the exhibition space. I chose to title this exhibition Hayikwiir Mat’aar out of respect for the Mohave people and the Mojave language.
