Jack Proctor painted his entire life and read well over 500 books on artists, techniques, and history. He had a master’s degree in fine art and taught art for over 40 years. This exhibition spans over 50+ years of his paintings and includes an eclectic variety of styles and mediums.
I have yet to find a way of not doing art. When I finish a painting, I usually have a blank canvas waiting in the wings of my studio. In my mind’s eye a new idea starts to take shape and I take a large brush to quickly cover the intimidating canvas.
When I stand in front on an easel, it is as close as I come to a religious experience. The chattering monkey that sits on my shoulder becomes mute and I experience a silence of mind.
There comes a time when a painting takes on a life of its own. Sketches, reference material, photographs are discarded, and the painting leads the way. It is my way of meditating, and my mantra is “design, composition, color, texture” as my tools create what was previously on my mind. I find pleasure in fooling the eye.
I find pleasure in not only fooling the eye, but also in directing it to a single stroke among thousands of stokes. My brushstrokes are more my signature than my name, for they are unencumbered by language.
