Ardie Yorgans: Beneath the Meadows

Ardie Yorgans: Beneath the Meadows

ARTIST STATEMENT

Around 1830, Mexican explorer Rafael Rivera discovered land with beautiful green meadows. In

Spanish he called it “las vegas.” The meadows disappeared when the sustainable groundwater was drained.

Today, Vegas is often seen as an uninhibited city of lights, money, and entertainment. For me, it's the small suburban city I grew up in. Neighborhoods and the landscape are matching shades of brown. Plants rely on irrigation like life support to survive.

In recent years I began to understand the difference between surviving and thriving. I knew I was simply surviving. To thrive I had to redefine who I am, learn what I need, and choose it again and again.

Beneath the Meadows is about my choice to thrive. Using abstraction, I reshaped my surroundings to create new worlds of what I wanted to see. It was my groundwater feeding the meadows.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Ardie Yorgans is a developing artist telling stories through photography. Raised in Las Vegas, Ardie’s long career in technology sat alongside a latent creativity. Over the years, this creative curiosity drew him to museums, performances, and mixed media from all over the world. He began to document his perspective through a lens inspired by modern art, architecture, and nature. By sharing his work, he hopes to inspire others to see the beauty in the details around them every day.
