Library District's legacy of service to the Historic Westside spans 52 years & counting with the introduction of a new facility

Las Vegas, NV – (Oct 13, 2025) – The Las Vegas-Clark County Library District announced today that beginning on October 13, the existing West Las Vegas Library branch – located at 951 West Lake Mead Blvd. – will embark on an exciting new phase in preparation for its new home.
The Library District is in the final phases of construction on the new West Las Vegas Library branch, which will be located at 1861 North MLK Blvd. To prepare for its grand opening on December 9, the existing library will begin sunsetting its services on October 13. The main entrance will be closed but customers can enter through the entrance on the north side of the building. Limited services at the existing branch will continue through November 23, and it will officially close its doors on November 24. Don't miss this special video message from West Las Vegas Branch Manager Lenika Coleman, who shares details about this exciting transition and how the Library District is supporting patrons throughout this period.
The new West Las Vegas Library will open its doors to the public on December 9, 2025 starting at 10:00 am, and will be open seven days per week to serve the public. The new library will celebrate its grand opening with a day-long celebration, inviting the community to enjoy food, music, art, live performances, storytimes, and so much more!
Until then, Library District staff will be working diligently behind the scenes to move in and set up the new facility.
"Opening a 21st Century library is an enormous undertaking, and our library departments will be all hands on deck for those 15 days leading up to the grand opening," said Kelvin Watson, executive director of the Library District. "We have been in full scale planning mode for the past year, purchasing new materials, technology, and equipment, and hiring and training additional staff for the many new services we will be offering. It is an exciting time for the Historic Westside, our staff, and all of our customers."
Watson explained that the Library District has been serving the Historic Westside since 1965, when the first branch opened in a little strip mall on "D" Street. The existing branch on West Lake Mead Blvd. opened in 1989, more than doubling in size, and quickly became a vital resource to its community – today welcoming an average of 21,000 residents each month.
This milestone is part of a new era for the Historic Westside community, and the Library District is thrilled to be a major contributor to it. The new state-of-the-art library will more than double the current library’s size to 41,178 square feet, featuring hands-on technology; a dedicated art gallery and original works throughout the building; live performances and programs that celebrate heritage; plus indoor and outdoor spaces to create new and engaging educational experiences for all ages.
Community members are invited to explore the rich history and lasting impact of the West Las Vegas Library on the Library District’s website.
