Literally: Everything I Need To Know In Life I Learned From My Dog….

I was walking my almost five year old goldendoodle this morning and as I watched him thoroughly enjoy an action packed trip up the street that we have made over 1000 times, I realized something. Everything we need to know about living a happy, healthy life can be seen right there at the end of the leash. The dog knows. Read and learn!

  • Stay curious. An open mind is the key to making every day feel like a brand new adventure.
  • Make friends. Most things in life are better shared with a buddy or two.
  • Rest when you are tired. This sounds like easy to follow advice but everyone I know is tired.
  • Eat when you are hungry. Dogs don’t know diet culture and they don’t ever turn down good food.
  • Take time to stop and smell the roses. Or dirt. ‘Nuff said.
  • Say hi. A friendly greeting puts everyone at ease.
  • Be wary of strangers. A good sniff lets you know when to bark instead. Trust your gut!
  • Play every day. All work and no play makes a dog very depressed. Let off some steam and chase that ball!
  • Be as excited to return home as you were to leave. Make your home a sanctuary where you always feel safe and welcome.
  • Spend time in the sun every day. It’s good for your mind and your mood.
  • Make good habits a routine. Your dog knows when it’s time to walk and time to eat dinner. Predictability is the ticket to success.
  • Reward yourself with a treat. Good boys get pup cups, good humans need a cookie now and again.
  • Stay tight with your pack. Because at the end of the day, dogs and humans are pack animals. We need each other to thrive.

At the end of your walk, after you’ve greeted everyone you know on the block and made friends out of those you didn’t, smelled new places and old favorites, caught a whiff of adventure on the faraway winds, it is important to get a cool drink and have a nap, curled up next to friends and dream of when you can do it all over again. You too, human, grab a book from this list and take a minute for yourself. You’re Free to Be resting up for your next great adventure!
