daniella etel courban: Spinning Sefirot

Spinning Sefirot is a modern interpretation of an ancient metaphysical framework found within Jewish mystical texts.

Across cultures and traditions, countless theories and stories attempt to explain how the world came into being. It’s a subject that has sparked curiosity in thinkers throughout history. How did we get from nothing to something?

One of the oldest known magical and mystical Hebrew texts, the Sefer Yetzirah (believed to date back thousands of years) describes ten sefirot, which can be understood both as numerical entities and as elements of creation. In the canonical kabbalistic text the Zohar, the sefirot become further developed as a system of qualities that shape aspects of human experience. These qualities, sometimes referred to as divine emanations, include kindness, strength, and beauty, to name a few.

There is a long-standing tradition of arranging the sefirot as circles in a specific geometric pattern. daniella has spent many years exploring and depicting them as spheres; sometimes within this familiar geometry and sometimes outside of it.

daniella’s artwork is in over 200 private collections, and she has participated in more than 30 solo and group exhibitions. Her professional background spans art, medicine, and teaching. When she’s not painting or drawing, daniella can be found studying Hebrew, swimming, practicing yoga, and deeply appreciating coffee and chocolate.
