Starrr Zara: The Sun is Always Shining

Starrr Zara, born Zahra Bilal in 1998, is from Kenya, Africa. She and her family immigrated to the United States in 2005, and have resided in Las Vegas ever since. Starrr attended West Preparatory Academy in the Historic Westside, where she discovered her love and passion for art. In 2019 she received her Associate of Arts degree from the College of Southern Nevada.

Starrr’s art offers whimsical and surreal stories of adventure, heroism, and self-reflections. The artist creates and shares her art with the hope of inspiring young artists to follow their dreams. Her practice contributes to the small but growing collection of African and African-American fictional figures depicted in the fantasy genre. Starrr Zara seeks to pierce through the general African-American depictions in art and give it a more contemporary, magical twist. Through the use of vibrant, saturated colors, patterns, and dynamic compositions, Starrr Zara brings the viewer into a world of her creation.

The Sun Is Always Shining is inspired by the saying, “There is a light at the end of every tunnel;” meaning no matter how hard times may get, better days are always ahead. It can be difficult to stay positive through the challenges life gives us, but things will improve and we’ll see the sunshine again.
