Vegas Valley Comic Book Festival Welcomes Jean Marie Munson

Jean Marie Munson is a feminist Filipina activist and cartoonist from Guam. She loves using comics as a means to educate and empower those that are underrepresented and misrepresented in comics. Jean co-founded Plot Twist Publishing, a local comics company, and co-founded Comics and Zines Las Vegas (Co-Zi LV). With both local entities, she teaches comic and zine workshops all over the Vegas Valley. Currently, she is a part-time professor in the University of Nevada Las Vegas (UNLV) Art Department and a graduate student in the University of Nevada Las Vegas (UNLV) School Counseling Program. Her goal is to build comic literacy and creativity among underserved communities. When Jean isn’t doing comics and teaching, she’s producing and co-hosting Bruha Baddies: A Pinay podcast to magically disappoint her Filipino parents.

Beyond the Neon and on to the Page!

Come join us at Clark County Library on November 5 to see Jean Marie moderate this candid discussion with comic creators Donovan Petersen, Joel Stokes, and Gina Parham about the agony and the ecstasy of creating comics in a city that is both a pop-culture powerhouse, but also notorious for ignoring its local creative scene. How do you meet your fellow creators? What works and what doesn't for creating and getting your stuff out there (and published!) in a city that's 24/7? How can you join your fellow creators in making comics? Look for "Beyond the Neon and on to the Page" on the programming schedule from 11 a.m. - 11:50 a.m. in the classroom.

Once Upon a Memoir

Join creators Nicole Georges and Jean Munson at Clark County Library on November 5 for a frank discussion about the art of airing your dirty laundry in public (aka telling the truth about your life and experiences).  How do you pick themes to explore?  How do you decide to depict others who were there? How do you keep it from turning into navel-gazing, and make something we all can read and engage with? Look for "Once Upon a Memoir" on the programming schedule from 2 p.m. - 2:50 p.m. in the classroom.
