This exhibit features stories and chairs designed by individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, their support staff, family members, and board members. The chairs tell a story of each of their lives and what it was like growing up with IDD or supporting someone with IDD.
New Vista Ranch has been working with the Las Vegas IDD community for nearly 35 years, and through its long tenure, New Vista has upheld its mission and goal of providing safe, loving homes for children, adults, and seniors with IDD. With 22 existing residences, and four upcoming children and youth homes, New Vista provides critical services that include supported living arrangements and a comprehensive menu of supportive services. The focus is always on improving opportunities for their personal development and growth.
New Vista offers a myriad of evidence-based programming and services that enhance and nurture their member’s lives. Art is a valuable therapeutic tool, and as such the arts are scheduled into members’ daily routines. Through New Vista’s Social & Art club, the concept of Have a Seat in My Chair was developed and the first dozen chairs were procured. The idea came from New Vista members themselves, to show the community what their favorite things, or most valuable memory is, and present it in design of their original chair piece.
This exhibit provides a platform for New Vista members to actively engage with the community and deliver their unique and personal message through their artistic renditions. The ultimate goal of Have a Seat in My Chair is to initiate conversation around IDD communities and the abilities of this special population.
