• The old Las Vegas Library building: Located at 833 North Las Vegas Blvd., this building now belongs to the City of Las Vegas and will no longer be a library site. The old Las Vegas Library will cease operating as of Saturday, April 20, at 6:00 pm, as staff and operations from this location will have officially moved over the new East Las Vegas branch.

Building & Grounds

• 41,051 interior square feet, plus a 1,500-square-foot outdoor play area.
• Flexible outdoor plaza can be used for community fairs, farmers markets, car shows, movie nights, festivals, and more, and there will be 10 park benches dotting the landscape.
• The Las Vegas-Clark County Library District Foundation and East Las Vegas QALICB, Inc. facilitated a $4 million private capital investment in this construction project, as part of the federal New Markets Tax Credit program, which seeks to stimulate investment in low-income communities.

Programming & Resources

The East Las Vegas library will serve as a hub for learning, economic advancement, and civic engagement. All services are free to the public:

• Adult Learning Center / One-Stop Career Center:       
  • Community Adult Learning in Libraries (CALL) program, which offers Adult Basic Education (ABE); High School Equivalency; Career Online High School; and English-language classes for non-native English speakers.
  • One-Stop Career Center, which offers employment search assistance, skills assessment, resume writing, job training, and educational workshops.
• “Built from Scratch” Tech Lab, where customers can access computers with software for graphic design, audio and video editing, music production; a soundproof room for audio recording (such as podcasts) and digital video cameras; a green screen wall; and industry-standard DJ equipment.
• Toy Lending Library, which gives children access to toys that they might not have otherwise, such as the popular American Girl Doll Series.
• Robotics Workshops for Tweens & Teens featuring a robotics mentor from UNLV’s Drones & Autonomous Systems Lab; program kicks-off this summer through funding provided by the Library District Foundation.
• Art Gallery, which showcases work by locally and nationally renowned artists.
• 1,000+ Programs Per Year, on topics such as early childhood education, STEAM, culinary and nutrition workshops, storytimes, cultural performances, and makerspace labs.

  • 32 computers for adults in the Computer Center;
  • 48 computers in the Adult Learning Center;
• Homework Help Center, which offers 20 laptops for youth, equipped with homework help resources.
• Youth Services Department, 20 additional computers, specifically for youth, will be available in an open area at a bank of desks.
• Laptop Lending Program, 20 available laptops to check out and use within the library.
• iPad Lending Program, a new service with 10 iPads available to check out and take home.

East Las Vegas Library Service Facts

• There are 14 elementary schools, two middle schools and three high schools surrounding the library.
• An estimated 71 percent of residents living in the area are young parents with children.
• 93.7 percent of households are Latinx, with a mix of Pacific Islander, and Central and South American heritages.
• Approximately 45,000 items make up the library’s materials collection:
  • Nearly 40 percent is dedicated to supporting youth, which includes a Toy Lending Library.
  • About 10 percent of the branch’s collection is Spanish-language; nearly one-third of magazines and newspapers offered are in Spanish; and bilingual materials are available for children.

Environmental Considerations

• In contrast to the library’s desert climate, a gathering of mature and verdant Aleppo pine trees surround the new East Las Vegas Library. The building design preserves and emphasizes this distinctive landscape by integrating it into the gathering spaces that are central to the library’s connection to the community.
• This group of pines classifies the area as an “urban forest.” This is defined as a collection of large trees within a city area, which helps to improve air quality by serving as a filter for urban pollutants and fine particulates, while also softening the landscape and reducing the stress for local residents. Select trees that had to be removed during construction were recycled into eight park benches, conveniently placed throughout the property.
• Colorful shade canopies highlight the main entry into the building, designed to complement the trees and provide additional outdoor spaces for gatherings and events.
• The new library will be submitted for a LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Gold Certification, which recognizes a building that has been constructed to reduce negative environmental impacts and improve occupant health and well-being. Facets of the East Las Vegas LEED construction and design include: energy-efficient glass walls, carpool and fuel-efficient vehicle priority parking, electric vehicle charging spaces, desert landscaping, energy efficient light fixtures (LED), and sustainable materials.

Library District Information

The Las Vegas-Clark County Library District is comprised of 25 individual branches that serve 1.5 million people across 8,000 square miles of Clark County, including the City of Las Vegas.

• There are 2.8 million items in the Library District’s collection, which is almost 20 times the total number of slot machines in Las Vegas.
• A 10-member Board of Trustees oversees operations.
• There are 675,000 library cardholders.
• Thanks to the Library District’s new website, customers are able to stream and download books, movies, music, and other materials from the comfort of their homes.
• The Library District recently introduced a collection of new library cards that were designed by members of the public, as well as the new Vegas Golden Knights library card, which was launched in February 2019.
