Emil Fu: Illusion and Reality

Emil Fu’s Illusion and Reality is an exploration of the creative process’ ability to soothe and inspire. Over 3 years in the making and featuring a multitude of artwork in a variety of styles, Fu was able to use the act of creating as an emotional support system as he transformed his stark reality in lock-down into a series of stunningly choreographed illusions. From bright abstract paintings, to ink landscapes, to charcoal portraiture; this exhibit demonstrates not only Fu’s versatile talents as an artist, but also the power and relief that one can find within the act of creation itself.

Artist’s Statement

I was traveling through China in 2020, and then, due to Covid-19 lock-down restrictions, I was unable to return home for nearly four years. While in isolation there, I began to explore Illusion and Reality with my eyes, mind, and heart through painting. By painting the beauty of illusions, I was able to find comfort as well as the courage to live through the difficulties of the reality I was in. For me, as an artist, painting proved to be a lifeline.
