Spirit of the Land: Equipo Academy Students Visit Avi Kwa Ame

On view in this exhibit are cyanotype prints created by Equipo Academy students. The printed images combine student photography and plant life from Avi Kwa Ame National Monument.

Avi Kwa Ame (Ah-VEE kwa-meh), the Mojave name for Spirit Mountain and the surrounding landscape located in Southern Nevada, is sacred to twelve tribes, including the 10 Yuman-speaking tribes who pay reverence to Spirit Mountain as the center of their creation. The National Monument (Nevada’s 4th) reserves some of the most visually stunning, biologically diverse, and culturally significant lands of the Mojave Desert.

Equipo Academy is a 6th-12th grade college prep charter school that opened in August 2015 for students in East Las Vegas. The mission of the school is to empower future first generation college students to meet high expectations, excel to and through college, and become transformational leaders within their community.

On exhibit at East Las Vegas Library from February 7, 2023 through April 18, 2023
