This installation is a replica of the space Nima Abkenar lived and worked in while he was an artist-in-residence with a program in Downtown Las Vegas. During the residency, the artist covered every square foot of his small apartment with painted cardboard. He then offered the cardboard pieces for sale to collectors so that others could share in the artist’s unique studio experience. Based on these original cardboard templates, Abkenar has reconstructed the living quarters here in an attempt to redefine the sponsoring artist-in-residence program that shuttered its doors permanently in May of 2020.
Nima Abkenar is a conceptual artist from Iran. In his work, he explores the subtleties of social phenomenon and political events. His dislocation from his native home at 17 has shaped his contextual and conceptual views in art and sociology. For the past five years, Abkenar has collaborated with art entities such as NASA, Black Mountain Institute, D-Well, AG Gallery, and the City of Las Vegas Office of Cultural Affairs to create installations and develop public art projects both nationally and in his home country, Iran.
On view at Sahara West Library from June 25 through December 6, 2021.
