100 Years of Military History

Don't miss this new exhibit featuring authentic American military uniforms from World War I, World War II, the Korean War and the War in Iraq on display through July 15, 2023 at the Sahara West Library.

The exhibit highlights the evolution of military equipment and includes field rations and other military items. One display honors Staff Sgt. David Bellavia, the only living Medal of Honor recipient of the War in Iraq and the author of the book, "House To House," which details Bellavia's harrowing missions in Iraq.

The display also focuses on Air Force Capt. Joseph McConnell, Jr., the highest-scoring jet ace in American history. McConnell, who trained at Nellis Air Force Base in Las Vegas, shot down 16 enemy fighter jets during the Korean War.

Also featured are the military medals of WWII hero William Hamberg, who was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for braving enemy artillery and small arms fire to lead his troops to defeat Nazi soldiers.

One soldier said, "It was the bravest thing I have ever seen any man do...a very nasty situation was averted, and the enemy was driven from the field." On another occasion, Lt. Col. Hamberg walked under enemy fire with a white, truce flag to negotiate the surrender of German troops in a German town, saving American and German lives.
