LAS VEGAS – Today, the Las Vegas-Clark County Library District (LVCCLD) broke ground for a new library in East Las Vegas anticipated to open in spring 2019. Made possible through the joint efforts of LVCCLD, the City of Las Vegas (CLV), Southern Nevada Regional Housing Authority (SNRHA) and the Las Vegas Natural History Museum (LVNHM), the 41,050 square-foot library facility will serve as a community hub for learning, economic advancement, and civic engagement.
“This new library will be an invaluable resource for the East Las Vegas community, providing opportunities for growth that this neighborhood richly deserves,” said Dr. Ronald Heezen, executive director of LVCCLD. “The facility is surrounded by 19 schools and will give thousands of children and adults critical access to free WiFi, a computer lab, and educational resources that will reduce the ‘digital divide’ and make things like school projects and job-hunting easier.”
The East Las Vegas Library will become a focal point for community gatherings, cultural events, civic meetings, and free programs such as after-school tutoring, English-language and citizenship instruction and career development. The groundbreaking ceremony included City of Las Vegas Mayor Carolyn G. Goodman, Las Vegas City Councilman Bob Coffin, and Clark County Commissioner Lawrence Weekly, as well as Nevada State Senator Moises Denis and East Las Vegas community member Serafin Calvo. The event was highlighted by the Presentation of Colors by Rancho High School Air Force JROTC Color Guard and performances by Walter Bracken, Robert Lunt, and Sunrise Acres Elementary Schools.
The East Las Vegas Library represents an important milestone in the history of the East Las Vegas community and will sit on a tree-lined, 8.5-acre parcel located on Bonanza Road and East 28th Street, Las Vegas, NV 89101. An estimated 71 percent of those living in the area are families with young parents and children.
