Greg Lauck: FACESCALE

Greg Lauck is an art teacher and portrait artist working in stylized realism. Over the past year, Lauck has made it a point to create a drawing every day.

Artist Statement:
After thinking about it once I got past the compulsion, I realized I make the art I make because at some point the choice isn’t mine. That is still true today. That is an achievement for an obsessive compulsive who spends the other waking hours overthinking everything.

When I was in my forties, I found myself wondering when I would make my own visual statement; as if it would come to me like a cattle brand or some sort of vision; or come attached to to a theme song and some Google Slides. When that passed, the good work began.

Some of these faces may belong to celebrities, but in my stylized realism, I see them all as a family of strangely carved people that evolve in a compulsion and belong together. Maybe you can decide how that is true.

Acknowledgement isn’t a favor you do them but it’s the company you keep. This isn’t a statement about the world but more the neighborhood in my head. They don’t always make eye contact in these black and white sketches, but you notice them. That may be enough. Even if you don’t, spending time with them in the same room may have the same effect it had on me. They are close company but I created them to be independent; yet I am protective.

I enjoy many different media and revel in color, but the stories of these people needed the emphasis of pencil texture and black and white. The world covets bright and shiny things and you’ll notice I’ve gone in the opposite direction. I’ve known the company of art in my heart my whole life, live with the voices, have taken some classes and even less advise, and teach art to children.
