Armand Thomas: ETCETERA – Photographs of Repetitive Patterns

Repetition in everyday life can be tedious, but in photography, it is a captivating canvas of patterns and elements. This collection combines the exoticism of world street photography with the common thread of an echoing style.

Artist Statement

Patterns surround us, either natural or man-made. They enhance everyday life by triggering our senses, adding wonder and curiosity. When repetition is captured in a photograph and shapes, lines, and colors are featured as an artful slice of reality, the result can become hypnotic, tantalizing, and verging on abstract.

This exhibit came about not through planning or design, but rather by serendipity – that is, my photographic tendencies over the course of some 40 years. Looking back, I couldn’t help but notice my penchant for composing and framing repeated imagery — surely not a unique attribute, but certainly a style that often caught my eye.

Travel is an inward journey taken in public places. I was a street-photographer before the term came into popular use, traveling the world with my camera as a constant companion, capturing everyday moments that delight, provoke and inform. Born in Cairo and raised in Montreal, I’ve made Las Vegas my home since 2004.
